Greased quiff

click picture to play or enlarge
My first ever really satisfying Greaser. Gives memories about feeling tough, metal pocket combs, mopeds (Kreidler and Zündapp) and petticoats. And clasping your wallet under the leg of your swimming trousers. Together with your metal comb. Swimming trousers as small as possible and your wallet as big as possible. Hey big spender!

I made this one for the earlier mentioned "Children's University". This one is for the chapter "Why is the sky blue?". This drawing is to show that a banana only reflects the yellow light particles and eats the others.

Illustration Friday: Free 2

click picture to play or enlarge
My dear colleague Eliane Duvekot reacted on my first IllustrationFriday-topic:Free > " Funny, the caterpillar in the basket looks like he is behind bars. Is that intentional?" Well, if it was intentional, it was unintentional intentional. By coincedence the above drawing was in my mind a couple of times in the last week. I consider it a message from my unconscience, to tell me something that is important to me. Must be something about the room I create for myself in every day life. Being busy since january with mourning about the loss and the suffering sickness, before that, of my wife, I sometimes live in a small room where I feel grieve, anger, dismay, resignation and so on. All these feelings have intensivied since I stopped, with a stopping scheme, with taking anti-depressiva. Making my breathing space very small. my feelings and the world are so impressive in this period that they compress me into a small personal room. You create your own prison to protect yourself. My mind, as I interpret it, is making it known to me in order to come out of it again, by showing me I imprison myself. Just lay down your bars and step from your small floor. Dog(energy), cat(intuition) and growing flower( meaning speaks for itself) are waiting there.

Taste

click picture to play or enlarge
Illustration I made for a book that is called "The Children's University" and is based on monthly lectures in which scientist try to explain a topic to children. Subjects like why is the sky blue?, why is shit brown?, why is the sea salt?, how do plants grow?, where is the rainbow coming from?, what happens when I sleep?. 10 lectures. Somewhere about 60 -90 illustrations. Lectures were held at "NEMO" , a science center in the Amsterdam harbour region, which looks like a ship.
This illustration is part of the "Smelling" lecture and expresses, the difference in which way your mouth open the doors to the sensation of taste. Mouth can only understand bitter, sweet, salt and sour.

Illustration Friday: Strength

click picture to play or enlarge
Does it need strength to carry a butterfly? Strength shows when you need it. It's a fashionable thing for a man to be able to show his weakness. Nevertheless sometimes fashionable things are very true. But it's ofcourse not the only strength. Would there be many men, showing their weakness on purpose? Must be a bunch of machos! I feel very weak all of a sudden.

Biking

click picture to play or enlarge

Illustration for a dutch recreational bikers magazine. Story of a man who started to have very much fun in biking in his youth and got involved in bike racing. He started to loose his joy in the competition. Refound his joy as a bike-courier in Amsterdam and enjoys his butt of now in England biking and not-so-serious-racing with funny hats and goggles wearing Englishmen.
He likes to look around while biking. Terms of joy on his shirt, terms of achieving on the othermens shirts. On top it says: "And the winner is ....?!".

Illustration Friday: Night

click picture to play or enlarge
There is more night during wintertime. Not only in the literal meaning, but also when you think about it in a expressive way to point out, how you're life is. At what stage. This drawing tells about this. When you are down and out, the seed for new things lies in trying to cope with and process your source of misery. Blues. If you can't cry for real, you can't laugh for real. If you are really able to feel the loss, you are better aware of new gain. I think. I guess

Rabbit

click picture to play or enlarge
Two illustrations for a kids page about rabbits. Big one about peculiarities of rabbits > tapping with their hindlegs to warn about danger, the wide variety of taste sensations they have, finding their way in the dark, thanks to the sensibility of their whiskers, never stopping the movement of their noses, the eyes in the top of their head, which on top of that they can turn to all sides, to spot possible ennemies, and the abbility to turn their ears to all sides, as well, for the same purpose and to detect carrots, which try to escape.
The small one is made to be cut out and pasted on cartboard, or something like that. The eyes cut out. Rabbit pasted on a bigger matchbox with holes in the cover and the eyes pasted on the back of the box. When the matchboxcover and box are put together again you can move the eyes from left to right. Should be fun.
